Chess Periodicals

Here is a list of some early chess periodicals and some current chess magazines.

 

64 is a Russian periodical that first appeared in 1924 as a magazine.  In 1935 it changed to a weekly newsletter.  It is now a monthly magazine edited by Alexander Roshal.

 

The American Chess Bulletin was published monthly by Hermann Helms (1870-1963) from 1904 to 1963.  There were 58 volumes.

 

The American Chess Journal was published from 1876 to 1881.

 

The American Chess Magazine (also called The Chess Player’s Magazine) was published from November, 1846 to September, 1847, then from 1897 to 1899 by W. Barsodi.  Charles Stanley was the first editor.

 

The American Chess Monthly was published in Boston from 1892 to 1893.  Its editor was G.H. Walcott.

 

The American Chess Quarterly was published from 1961 to 1965.  The principal editor was Larry Evans.  16 issues were published.

 

The American Chess Review was published from 1886 to 1887.

 

Black and White chess magazine was first published in 2004 in India and appeared 4 times a year.

 

Brentano’s Monthly was published from 1879 to 1882.

 

Brooklyn Chess Chronicle was published from 1882 to 1887.  The editor was J. B. Munoz.

 

Bruderschaft Deutsches Wochenschach was a weekly chess periodical published in Germany from 1885 to 1888, then from 1889 to 1925.

 

The British Chess Magazine has been published monthly since 1881.

 

Brownson’s Chess Journal, also known as The Dubuque Chess Journal and The Chess Journal, was published from 1870 to 1892.

 

 

Bulletin of The American Chess Association was published in 1858.  There was only one issue.

 

Capablanca Chess Magazine was published from 1912 to 1914.

 

Ceske listy sachove was published in 1896.  There were four issues.

 

Checkmate magazine was published from 1901 to 1903.

 

CHESS magazine was first published in England in 1935.

 

The Chess Amateur was published from 1907 to 1908.

 

The Chess Correspondent was first published in 1930.

 

Chess Express/Schach Express was published twice a month in Switzerland.  It first appeared in 1968.

 

Chess Informant was first published in 1966 in Yugoslavia.

 

Chess Life magazine first appeared in 1946.

 

The Chess Monthly was published in the U.S. from 1857 to 1861 by D.W. Fiske.

 

The Chess News was published in 1916.

 

The Chess Palladium and Mathematical Sphinx was published from October 1846 to December 1846 (3 issues) by N. Marache of New York.

 

The Chess Player’s Chronicle was first published in England from 1841 to 1856, then from 1859 to 1875, then from 1877 to 1902.

 

The Chess Player’s Scrapbook was published in 1907.

 

The Chess Record was published in Philadelphia in 1873.  There were seven issues.

 

Chess Review magazine was published from 1933 until it merged with Chess Life in 1969.

 

Chess Weekly was published from 1908 to 1909.

 

The Chess World was published in Washington, DC in 1893.  Its editor was F.A. Cooley.

 

The City of London chess Magazine was published from 1875 to 1876.

 

The Columbia Chess Chronicle was published in the U.S. from 1887 to 1891.

 

Corsair magazine was published in 1907.

 

Der Schachfreund was published in Germany from 1898 to 1901.

 

Deutsche Schachzeitung was published monthly in Germany from 1846 to 1988.

 

Deutsch Wochenschach und Berliner Schachzeitung was published from 1889 to 1902.

 

EG magazine for endgames was first published in the Netherlands in 1965.

 

Europe Echecs was first published in France in 1959.

 

The Gambit was published in New York from October 1859 to November 1859 by Lichtenhein.

 

The Household Chess Magazine was published in 1865.

 

Huddersfield College Magazine was published from 1873 to 1880.

 

ICGA Journal was first published in 1977 and covers computer chess and games.

 

The International Chess Magazine was published from 1885 to 1891.

 

Jaque is a monthly Spanish chess magazine that was first published in 1970.

 

Kingpin was published 3 times a year in England beginning in 1985.

 

L’Echiquier d’Aix was published from 1878 to 1884.

 

L'Échiquier Journal D'Echecs was published in 1889.

 

L'eco degli Scacchi was published in 1914 and 1916.

 

 

L’Italia Scacchistica was first published in Italy in 1911.

 

La Regence was published from 1849 to 1851, and in 1856.

 

La Strategie was published in France from 1867 to 1940.

 

Le Palamede was published in France from 1836 to 1847.

 

Lasker’s Chess Magazine was published in 1905.

 

Magdeburger Schachzeitung was published in 1849.

 

The Maryland Chess Review was published from January 1874 to December 1874.

 

Neue Berliner Schachzeitung was published from 1864 to 1871.

 

New in Chess was first published in the Netherlands in 1985.

 

New Zealand Chess Chronicle was published in 1887.

 

Nordisk Skaktidende was published from 1873 to 1881.

 

Northwest Chess is a monthly chess magazine first published in 1947.

 

Nouvelle Régence was published from 1860 to 1863.

 

Nuova Rivista degli Scacchi was published from 1875 to 1893.

 

Oesterreichische Lesehalle was published from 1881 to 1890.

 

Oesterreichische Schachzeitung was published in 1874.

 

El Pablo Morphy was published in 1891.

 

The Philidorian was published in England from 1837 to 1838 by George Walker.

 

The Problemist was first published in England in 1926.

 

Revista de Ajedrez, La was published in 1889.

 

Rivista degli Scacchi, La was published in 1859.

 

Sachové Listy was published in 1900.

 

Schaak Magazine was first published in the Netherlands in 1893.

 

Schaakblad was published in 1912.

 

Schaakcourant, De was published in 1908.

 

Schach magazine was first published in Germany in 1961.

 

Schach-Magazin 64 was first published in Germany in 1979.

 

Schachzeitung was published from 1847 to 1970.

 

Schweizenische Schachzeitung was first published monthly in Switzerland in 1900.

 

Shakmatny Bulletin was published monthly in the USSR from 1955 to 1990.

 

Shakmaty v SSSR was published monthly in the USSR from 1921 to 1991.

 

Sissa magazine was published from 1847 to 1874.

 

Sonntags-Blätter für Schachfreunde was published in 1861

 

Southern Counties Chess Journal was published in 1893.

 

Sphinx, Le was published in 1865.

 

Süddeutsche Schachblätter was published in 1907 and 1908.

 

Sussex Chess Magazine was published in 1882.

 

Tidsskrift for Skak was first published monthly in Sweden in 1895.

 

Tijdschrift van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Schaakbond was published from 1893 to 1914.

 

The Week in Chess first appeared online in 1994.

 

The Westminster Chess Club Papers was published from 1868 to 1878.
